When it comes to mixing Afro-Cuban
rhythms with Jazz-like arrangements, the Pedrito Martinez Group must be
mentioned. By respecting the essential roots of Cuban music, and with
incredible performances of virtuous musicians, the group manages to make
everyone dance in every concert. Pedro Pablo Martinez, a percussionist born in
Havana, Cuba on September 12, 1973, is the founder and leader of the band since
2008. He has had the opportunity to either perform, record and/or tour with
well-known artists of the contemporary musical scene in America such as Sting,
Paquito D’Rivera, Eddie Palmieri, and Bill Summers.
The band is
composed of Ariacne Trujillo (Piano and Vocals) from Havana, Cuba; Jhair Sala
(Percussion and Chorus) from Lima, Peru; Alvaro Benavides (Bass and Chorus)
from Caracas, Venezuela; and Pedrito Martinez (Percussion, Vocals and Band
Leader). They perform regularly at Guantamera Restaurant in New York City when
they are in town. As Derek Truck indicates: “It’s one of those rare events
where you get to see world-class musicians in a tiny restaurant, and they’re
just playing because they love it.” (Truck, 2011). Additionally, they tour
worldwide every year, performing principally in Jazz festivals.
I recently
had the opportunity to watch the band perform, and their energy is completely
impressive. On the other hand, and from the artist management standpoint, this
band combines its incredible musical versatility with other advantages when it
comes to touring. The fact of having only four members permits them to have low
tour expenses compared to other bands with similar characteristics. The same
reason makes them fit not only for big music festivals, but also for private
events with reduced attendance such as corporate meetings and congresses.
Moreover, their virtuosity and expertise give them the chance to adapt to
different audiences, interpreting classic Bolero and Charanga songs to aggressive
Timba or Jazz arrangements.
Whether you are close to the famous
Latin Jazz festivals around the world or in New York City area, don’t miss the
opportunity to witness the amazing performances of Pedrito Martinez Band. Stay
tuned for more!
