Every year in November the Latin Music wears its best suit
for the most important Latin event of the year, The Latin Grammy Awards. The
award ceremony will take place on November 21st this year in Las
Vegas, and Univisión will broadcast the show live starting at 8pm EST. This
year the Latin Academy will honor Miguel Bosé as the Latin Music Personhood of
the year.
So far everything looks like another regular edition of the
show carried by the Latin Recording Academy. However, this year there are some
differences within the list of nominees. Particularly, the Venezuelan music
industry has some very successful artists that have been very successful
locally, but they have never been significantly recognized outside the country
borders. The case of Guaco, with more than 4 decades of remarkable existence,
is the best example one can find. Evolving from the fusion of different
regional rhythms with international sounds, Guaco has probably become the most
popular band of Venezuela within the last 25 years. The band’s last CD called
“Escultura” is nominated in the categories “best album of the year” and “best
tropical contemporary album”. After many years trying to get international
awareness, the band led by Gustavo Aguado finally got a well-deserved spot
among the best Latin artists of the world by simple bring nominated.
Guaco
Nevertheless, the Venezuelan crew for the Latin Grammys this
year is not only conformed by Guaco. The most famous
Salsa artist of Venezuela, Oscar D’Leon, will receive the Latin Grammy
honorific award, to glorify his long and successful career. The rest of the
Venezuelan nominees’ list is composed by: Los Amigos Invisibles (2009 Latin
Grammy Award Winners), Vocal Song, Ricardo Montaner, La Vida Bohéme, Gaelica,
C4 Trio and Gualberto Ibarreto, Huascar Barradas, Grupo Treo, Tecupae, Yordano,
and Famas Loop.
